More vigilance on child abuse needed at holidays

Courier-Journal, letter to the editor, Nov. 30, 2015, http://cjky.it/1PnZIPt The holidays are a time to spend time with friends and family and to give thanks for and celebrate the many gifts we enjoy – families, material, health and spiritual. However, often accompanying these feelings of joy and gladness are increases in stress that may put children at risk. Sadly, holidays often are among the busiest times for agencies working with children and families hurt by abuse. Intentions are the best, but stress from travel, family and personal relationships, deadlines, school, shopping and its associated expenses mounts and even the most […]

New year will bring new help for dating violence victims

The days of dating partners having to file criminal charges to secure some personal safety and security are fast ending – and they can’t end soon enough. House Bill 8, which provides dating couple the same protections afforded to married or co-habiting couples, or those with a child together, becomes law Jan. 1, eight months after its April passage by the Kentucky General Assembly. The new Interpersonal Protective Orders provision fills an enormous hole in the law – providing parity and protection, and gives peace of mind to victims of dating abuse. Since April, officials have been busy training service […]

Reaccreditation a challenging but worthwhile pursuit

At a time when most are thinking about the holidays – giving thanks and looking forward to sharing gifts and good times with family and friends – Family & Children’s Place is busy getting ready for reaccreditation.  Staff is still providing trauma-informed hope and healing, but also readying mountains of proof-providing paperwork and for a site visit by independent evaluators. Accreditation is a once every four years process – one we voluntarily pursue – that demonstrates excellence in services and programs. It’s important to us and to the children and families we serve, proving that: Services are delivered by appropriately […]

Giving hearts guarantee Brighter Holidays

We are thrilled to report that holiday-minded and generous people, companies and organizations have stepped up to sponsor all children identified through our Brighter Holidays program. Even better, more children were added to the program and more sponsors signed up, meaning even more children will be getting gifts. Family & Children’s Place created the program understanding that for most, the holidays are a time of excitement and anticipation – but not for all. For children and families enduring trauma from abuse and neglect, the holidays too often bring additional stress with little joy. A little help and hope, and a […]

Vow on World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse to end horrific crime

Today, Nov. 19, is the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse, an international recognition that abuse – sexual, physical and neglect – exists in every country, every culture, every community and that to end this horrific scourge will require all of humanity. In April in America, we celebrate National Child Abuse Prevention Month, but on Nov. 19, in 2000, the Women’s World Summit Foundation (WWSF), a non-governmental organization, launched the first World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse. Working alongside an international coalition of advocacy organizations for women and children’s issues, WWSF mobilized governments and societies to take action […]

Giving begins with teaching in the home

When it comes to a child’s ingenuity to raise money for a cared-for cause, there seldom are limits. From lemonade stands to car washes to read-a-thons to simple asking for money, kids find ways to support things they believe in. So at Family & Children’s Place, where children are our most important clients, gifts from children have an extra special quality to them. Every gift is precious and every nickel, dime and dollar raised helps change a life. It’s the purest form of giving – raising money – or giving away an allowance – for something for which they expect […]

Hope makes a great holiday gift

Black Friday is just 10 days away, Friday, Nov. 27, one of the busiest shopping days in the United States This year, how about forgoing the harried hassle of pre-holiday traffic, finding a parking place and fighting over “hot buys,” and giving some help and hope instead? A gift to Family & Children’s Place probably isn’t top of mind when it comes to your holiday shopping, but it should be. Does your father, mother, sister brother really need a new sweater or the latest computer tech or toy? Probably not, but a child who’s been abused – physically, sexually or […]
