Kentucky Attorney General Beshear creates Survivors Council

From the Courier-Journal Survivors of sexual assault are often asked to tell their stories. Asking for their advice is more unusual. That’s why Clorissa Novak, a 28-year-old from Louisville, decided to take part in a new initiative Attorney General Andy Beshear has launched that invites the victims of serious crimes to weigh in on important issues. Beshear just formed a “Survivors Council” – comprised of people like Novak who have survived sexual assault as well as people who have lost loved ones to violence – to advise his office on how to better support crime victims in Kentucky. “I thought it was […]

Katya Estes: Important voice on Survivors Council

Congratulations to Katya Estes on her selection as a member the Survivors Council for the office of Kentucky Atty. Gen. Andy Beshear. Estes endured abuse by her grandfather, and last year won a keystone civil case against him, will be an important and powerful voice for the council and for children and families hurt by trauma of abuse. Estes, who does not like the word, victim, sees herself – as do we – as a warrior. We are proud and humbled that she has been a warrior for Family & Children’s Place and that now she takes up the battle […]

Do your children have body safety rules?

Body safety for a child may well be a buzzword, but it’s critically important in the effort to prevent and protect children against child abuse. Essentially, body safety is teaching children about boundaries – appropriate touch, private parts – and it contributes to confidence as well as to preventing child abuse. It empowers a child, gives them some control, and why wouldn’t parents want to teach body safety? We teach water safety, to use seat belts in the car, to wear helmets when bicycling. Body safety is another measure children can use to protect them and contribute to their own […]

Brighter Holidays gifts bring smiles to Burmese family

Megan Miller, who works with our HANDS team, shared a story about and a thank you for one of her families that participated in our Brighter Holidays program. In Megan’s word: “Cian San’s mom wanted to say thank you so much for all of the awesome things you got for him!  This family is Burmese and they are very serious people.  I don’t often see them crack a smile, but today, they were overjoyed with excitement when opening your gifts!  “I don’t think she could contain her excitement to wait for Christmas to open them.  She shared on a previous […]

A tearful thank you to Kosair Charities

A message from President and CEO Pam Darnall: In December, I was reminded of the powerful truth of Bruce Springsteen’s song, “From small things (big things one day come).” December is an especially busy time for nonprofits, including Family & Children’s Place. In addition to our end of year fundraising push, juggling appointments to make sure our clients get the best and most enduring attention and care possible, we were buried – quite literally – by the generosity of donors sponsoring children through our Brighter Holidays program. Our lobby, boardroom and meeting rooms looked like a Toys R Us franchise. […]
