Jaylen’s story

Jaylen* was just seven years old when he witnessed an argument between his parents that escalated into physical violence. They came to Family & Children’s Place in search of healing. Jaylen began meeting with “Miss Lauren” Ganote, one of our highly-trained trauma therapists. While he was always very engaged in counseling sessions, Jaylen struggled to express any negative emotions – especially the sadness, anger, and fear he felt about his parents’ violent argument. But when his family began meeting with Miss Lauren by video during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jaylen opened up like never before. Jaylen’s mom was able to participate […]

Continuing the conversation about race

Family & Children’s Place proudly values and embraces diversity and inclusion: in the manner we operate our business while serving the community, in our board of directors and staff, in our clients, and in how we go about preventing, stopping, and healing child abuse and neglect. It’s precisely this value on diversity and inclusion that compels us to speak up and actively engage in conversations about racial equity and justice. As we provide services to children and families, we witness firsthand the lasting effects of individual trauma. But we’re also keenly aware of the realities and effects of collective trauma when it […]

Clare’s story

Clare* is 7 years old. Not long after the COVID-19 pandemic began, Clare’s world was turned upside down. Authorities had begun investigating a family member on suspicion of possessing child sex images and sexually abusing Clare. Clare and her sisters were brought to Family & Children’s Place to be seen by the caring, compassionate, and highly-trained staff at our child advocacy centers. Our team conducted forensic interviews for use by law enforcement, connected Clare’s mom with legal and therapeutic resources, and ensured Clare, her sisters, and her mom would be safe while the investigation continued. As they drove away from […]

Give the gift of hope & healing

Sean and Ben, brothers ages 10 and 11, were removed from their mother’s home due to severe neglect. It was soon learned their uncle, who had been babysitting them, had sexually abused them. Put into a foster home together, the boys started to exhibit negative behaviors such as extreme outbursts, bathroom issues, and stealing. The transition was very hard on Sean and Ben. After receiving medical exams and forensic interviews at Family & Children’s Place, the boys were assigned to recovery therapy. Despite the boys living in an abusive home, they had parents who they missed very much. They had […]

Nicole’s story

Today, Nicole’s outlook is profoundly different. It sounds so simple, but to new mothers like Nicole, stability, safety, and support is everything! “Growing up was hard. I was sexually abused at 3 years old and my mom was a drug addict. Now I’m 26 years old, pregnant, homeless, and scared. I have trust issues and I’m leery of new people who say, “I want to help.” But I had to do something for the sake of my unborn baby. “Through a referral, I decided to seek help from Family & Children’s Place. Their HANDS worker visited me while I was […]

Long time volunteer and Ambassador shadows HANDS family

Recently, one of our Ambassadors, Shannon Siders, participated in a shadowing opportunity with our HANDS program. Shannon has been a regular volunteer since she joined the organization in 2014 as part of the inaugural Ambassador class. We’re so excited that she decided to rejoin the Ambassador program. When I moved back to Louisville in 2014, one of my priorities was to volunteer for an organization that was making a difference in the community. I was connected to Family & Children’s Place within that first year and was thrilled to become a member of their inaugural group of Ambassadors.   I’ve […]
